What a riding offer should name: seven details and real examples
An offer often says more by what is missing than by what it names.
Weight limit, minimum age, duration, price components, water, group, cancellation: how to tell that a detail is missing in an offer, and how to ask for it.
1. Weight limit
Some providers name it, some do not. Some providers justify a limit with the welfare of the horses, others exclude heavier people. If the detail is missing, ask in kilograms, not in clothing sizes.
2. Minimum age and level
Some providers name a minimum age and write that most guests are beginners. Others separate an offer for beginners from one for experienced riders with trot, canter and shallow water. Ask what “for beginners” means: at a walk, with an introduction, led.
3. Duration
A stated time can include the introduction, grooming and travel. For an offer in Picardy, getting to know and grooming the horses is part of the stated time. For a beach ride in Sicily and for a ride in Side the listing and the description name different durations. Ask: how long am I in the saddle?
4. What is in the price
With some offers an entrance fee, hotel pick-up or the riding itself come on top of the stated price. Ask for the total price and whether an online payment is the full price or a deposit.
5. Water
Some offers ride in water: through shallow sea water (Durrës), in a river (Ljuta in Croatia), with “time to swim” on the beach (Menorca). Whether horses swim is not stated in most offers. Ask how deep the ride goes and whether the horses swim in the water.
6. Group, guide, equipment
Some providers name the group size, a provided helmet and a snack in the price, others certified instructors or equestrian tourism professionals. If group size and number of guides are missing, ask, and ask about helmet and shoes too.
7. Cancellation and weather
In the offers we read, it is rarely stated what happens in rain, heat or storm. Ask before booking until when cancellation is free and whether the provider cancels or postpones in bad weather.
How to judge the answers
We do not rate providers. A clear, complete answer is no proof of quality, a missing answer no proof of the opposite. It helps you to find the ride that fits your level, your weight and your budget.
