Riding holiday without your own horse: how it works
If you ride without your own horse, you book a horse with the ride: from a short ride to a ride of several days.
How a riding holiday without your own horse works, which forms exist, how the horse is assigned and what to clarify beforehand.
What riders search for
The Google suggestions for “reiturlaub” (riding holiday) show what is searched: Spain, adults, adults without own horse, adults without own horse by the sea, North Sea, Bavaria, nearby, with own horse nearby, Iceland and Austria. Whoever wants to travel without their own horse is not alone, and often searches by the sea or nearby. The suggestions show search forms, not numbers.
What "without your own horse" means
You come with yourself, not with the horse. The provider supplies the horse, and for many offers also introduction and riding guide. For an offer in Bologna the riding equipment, an introduction and an experienced riding guide are included (according to the provider). The booking portal Book Horse Riding Holidays, whose country lists we show on our Reiterferien page, has a filter of its own “With own horse” with 8 offers. The other filters, such as beginner, intermediate, advanced, trail riding and riding weekends, name between 64 and 388 offers each (as of 4 October 2026). That suggests that the horse supplied by the provider is the usual case, though the portal gives no ratio.
Which forms exist
In our selection there are:
- Ride of a few hours, on one day, often with aperitif or wine tasting. This is the most common form.
- Half-day and day ride, with lunch. Examples are San Gimignano and Florence.
- Multi-day ride, in our Tuscany selection near Montieri, on our Reiterferien page also worldwide (country lists, trail riding).
- Riding holiday as a stay, with riding-holiday providers including accommodation and horse.
Duration according to the provider in each case.
How the horse is assigned
The provider chooses the horse according to your information. Reit-Safari writes that it asks about your riding experience and the character the horse should have, so that its partners on site can take your requirements and wishes into account when assigning horses. The more precise your statements on level, weight and gaits, the better the horse fits. You find your weight and experience in our guides.
What you bring
Long trousers and closed shoes are named by providers like the one in Bologna, and weather clothing depends on place and season. Everything else is in our packing list. Whether a helmet is supplied is stated by the provider.
How to find the right ride
- Decide place or theme (beach, mountains, wine).
- Look at the country or region page for places, weather and questions before booking.
- Narrow down in the list “All rides” with the filters (country, beach, mountains, day ride, price, duration).
- Check with the provider level, weight limit and meeting point.
Questions for the provider
- How is the horse chosen for me?
- Which level does the ride require, and is there a weight limit?
- What is included in the offer (horse, helmet, introduction, transfer)?
- How large is the group, and how many guides accompany it?
- How is cancellation regulated?
