Understanding rides in the water: what the providers describe and what you should ask

“Ride on the sea” can mean anything from a walk in the sand to swimming with the horse.

Beach, shallow water, river, lagoon, swimming: examples from real offers and five questions before booking.

Five ways offers name the water

  1. On the beach, without water. Providers name rides on the beach (Durrës in Albania, Alcúdia on Mallorca, Orosei on Sardinia) with no mention of water.
  2. In shallow water. A provider near Durrës names trot, canter and shallow sea water for experienced riders; a provider near Bodrum writes that guests ride on the beach and let the horse into shallow water; a provider in Miami describes a guided ride in shallow water.
  3. In a river. A provider in Croatia describes a ride in the water of the River Ljuta; cards name river crossings near Dubrovnik and Saint-Tropez.
  4. In the sea. Providers near Katakolo name a ride through pine forest, along the beach and into the sea; Antalya names a ride “in the sea” with the option to bathe.
  5. Swimming with the horse. A provider on Zakynthos names riding and swimming with the horses on the beach (with a weight limit, not suitable for non-swimmers); a provider in Puerto Escondido in Mexico writes that the horses swim when crossing the lagoon while guests go by boat; a provider in Puerto Vallarta names that guests can swim with the horse.

What we do not know

Most offers do not state how deep the water is, how long the horses are in the water and how they are looked after afterwards. We have not visited the businesses and have not checked the statements. Statements on the horses’ welfare come from the providers.

Five questions before booking

  1. How deep is the water, and how long are horses and guests in the water?
  2. Do the horses swim, or do they only walk in shallow water?
  3. What weight limit applies, and can I stay at a walk?
  4. Can I swim, and what about non-swimmers (one provider names them as not suitable)?
  5. How many guides are there, and how is it decided in high water, currents or waves?

What we could not confirm

Examples are extracts from offers that may change. On keeping, weight and working hours of the horses we read no source for any business.
