The vine cycle

According to the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, the vines bud in April, the grapes ripen from the third ten-day period of September to the second ten-day period of October, and the leaves fall in the second half of November. Anyone riding in October rides between harvest and leaf fall. This holds for the Chianti, not automatically for the Maremma or the coast.

The weather

The regional weather consortium LaMMA usually names November as the wettest month of Tuscany. The normals of the Italian weather service (via the WMO, 1971 to 2000) for Florence show in October a mean daily maximum of 20.9 degrees with 104.2 millimetres of rain, in November 14.7 degrees with 113.6 millimetres; the year brings 872.6 millimetres. For Pisa on the coast it is 20.9 degrees in October and 15.3 degrees in November. July in Florence is at 31.4 degrees; in autumn heat is no longer the issue, the rain and the ground after rain are.

What this means for the ride

According to the offers, rides start in the hills outside Florence, with villas, castles and woods; Visit Tuscany names the woods of Vallombrosa and Reggello with centuries-old trees. In November woods and paths are wet. Ask about ground, rain plan and start time.
