Riding on Vesuvius: three areas between volcano and Pompeii
Vesuvius is the only active volcano in continental Europe.
The Vesuvius National Park says so itself. The mountain is currently at rest, and small steam vents on the Gran Cono show that it lives. Around it lie vineyard slopes, forest and the ruins of Pompeii. We show three areas with offers: Vesuvius, the Somma slopes and Pompeii. For each we say who it suits and what to watch for.
Vesuvius and the Gran Cono
Vesuvius has the shape of a truncated cone, and according to the national park its highest peak reaches 1,277 metres. The crater is 450 metres across and 300 metres deep. The last eruption was in 1944. The national park was founded on 5 June 1995. Several rides on Vesuvius name a wine tasting.
Who it suits. Riders who want to see a volcanic landscape and like a programme of ride and tasting.
What to watch. How far up the ride goes. The provider says whether a ride ends at the Gran Cono.
- Confirmed: only active volcano in continental Europe, 1,277 metres, crater 450 metres wide and 300 metres deep, state of rest, last eruption 1944, park founded 1995 (Vesuvius National Park).
- From the provider: starting point, route, level, group, tasting schedule.
- Clarify before booking: how high the ride goes, whether the Gran Cono is part of the programme and how much time is spent in the saddle.

The Somma slopes
Vesuvius stands within the half circle of Monte Somma, the older volcano. Somma is 1,132 metres high at Punta Nasone. According to the national park its slopes are among the wildest and most pristine areas of the park, with extensive woodlands of chestnut, locust trees, birch, maple and alder. We have not confirmed whether any of the rides runs through these woods. The offers name Vesuvius, not the Somma.
Who it suits. Riders who look for forest and a view together.
What to watch. The expectation. The woods belong to the park, a ride there is not confirmed.
- Confirmed: height, woods and tree species (Vesuvius National Park).
- From the provider: which slopes are ridden.
- Clarify before booking: whether the route runs through forest or over open slopes.
Pompeii
When Vesuvius erupted on 24 August 79, it buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. According to UNESCO, Pompeii has an excavated area of 44 hectares. It is the only archaeological site in the world that gives a complete picture of an ancient Roman city. The World Heritage listing dates from 1997. The offers combine a ride, lunch or wine tasting with Pompeii.
Who it suits. Travellers who want to combine ruins and a ride in one day.
What to watch. The length. A day programme has several stops, and the ride is only one part.
- Confirmed: eruption on 24 August 79, 44 hectares excavated, listing 1997 (UNESCO).
- From the provider: whether the site is visited, schedule, winery, lunch.
- Clarify before booking: how many hours are ridden and whether the entry to Pompeii is included.

Questions before booking
- Where is the meeting point and how far is the journey?
- Which riding level and weight limit apply?
- How long is actually spent riding, and how long eating or tasting?
- Does the ride go to the Gran Cono, and do access rules apply?
- Is a visit to Pompeii included, and how long does it take?

What we could not confirm
For none of the three areas did we find climate values (temperature, rain), riding rules or route descriptions. Riding itself is confirmed nowhere, only through the providers' details. Rides in other parts of Campania (Sorrento, Salerno, Benevento, Sant'Agata de' Goti) and in the south are not part of these three.
