Riding on Mallorca in winter: light, rain and the Serra de Tramuntana
On Mallorca winter is mild, but in December the sun shines less than half as long as in July.
What the AEMET normals say about sun and rain, where riding takes place in winter and what to settle before you book for December or January.
The numbers
According to AEMET (station Palma Puerto, normals 1981 to 2010) the mean daily maximum is 15.4 degrees in January, 19.2 in April, 29.4 in July and 23.7 degrees in October. Rain is 6 millimetres in July, 69 in October and 48 in December; the year brings 449 millimetres. The sun shines on average 346 hours a month in July and 151 in December. The WMO page for Palma (normals 1981 to 2010) gives 15.2 degrees daily maximum and 3.8 degrees night minimum in January. The stations lie on the coast in Palma; inland and in the mountains the values may differ.
What this means for the ride
In July heat decides the start time, in October the rain, in winter the daylight. The Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, is according to UNESCO a cultural landscape of terraces with dry-stone walls, olive groves, water systems and villages; we have not found rides there with the providers. Our offers lie in the north-east (Alcúdia) and in the middle of the island (Randa). One provider writes that very few routes on the island allow horses on the sand; in winter ask whether the beach is part of the ride at all.
Questions for the provider
- Do you ride in winter, and on which days not?
- When does the ride start, and how much daylight is left?
- What applies in rain, and until when is cancellation free?
- Does the ride go on the beach, on which stretch, and is that so all year?
- Which clothing is provided, what should I bring?
- What level is required, and is there a weight limit in kilograms?
- How many guests and how many guides are there?
What we could not confirm
Values for Palma only. No rides in the Serra de Tramuntana with the providers. Which providers ride in winter is stated by each provider.
