Five Rides in Bulgaria, from Sofia to the Rhodopes
In Bulgaria the rides lead into the mountains. Around Sofia, in Rila and in the Rhodopes, our partner Viator lists rides from one hour to a day with an overnight stay, and we have hardly any official sources on the routes, which we say for every place.
Sofia and Vitosha
Profile. Trail ride. Ride to the Glozhene Monastery, 5 hours, from 115 euros. Ride near Sofia through the Bulgarian landscape, 4.5 hours, from 110 euros. Landscape. The park directorate calls Vitosha "the first park in Bulgaria and on the Balkan peninsula" (wording of the source, the superlative is not ours). According to Visit Bulgaria, the capital combines ancient ruins, modern architecture and the nearby Vitosha mountain.
Weather. The park directorate describes the weather in the high parts of Vitosha as unpredictable and dangerous (paraphrased from the Bulgarian original). Whether the rides go there is stated by the provider.

Landscape. According to Visit Bulgaria, Plovdiv is among the oldest cities in Europe and was European Capital of Culture in 2019. We found no statement of our own on the Rhodopes or Smolyan.

Landscape. According to the park directorate, Rila National Park has existed since 24 February 1992 and was created to preserve the nature of the mountain and its related traditions.
Rules. We found no riding rule. Grazing and haymaking in the park require a permit, that does not concern the ride but shows that rules of the park apply. Ask the provider.

Landscape. According to Visit Bulgaria, Borovets lies on the northern slopes of the Rila mountains, some 70 kilometres from Sofia. We give no altitude because two retrievals returned different values.
Season. According to the same source the ski season runs, in paraphrase, from mid-December to April.

What to pack
Weatherproof clothing in layers, the weather changes in the mountains. Sturdy shoes with a heel, long trousers. Enough water and something to eat for long rides. For overnight stays, ask the provider what they supply (tent, sleeping bag). Ask about a helmet and rain jacket too.
