Five Beach Rides in Southern Europe
Riding on a beach is rarely just a question of the horse. Where it is allowed is often not in the catalogue, so for every place we say what we can prove and what we cannot. Five places in Portugal and Spain, all with offers according to Viator.

What to pack
Sun protection and a head covering that fits under a helmet if the provider does not supply one. Sturdy shoes with a heel. Something warm for the evening, it gets cooler by the water after sunset. A water bottle and a phone in a pocket on your body. Ask the provider what they supply (helmet, chaps, girths, rain jacket).
Questions for the provider
1. Where on the beach is the ride, and does a local rule apply there to horses or animals?
2. Which gaits are possible, and do you ride in the water?
3. How big is the group, and how many guides accompany it?
4. Which level and which weight limit apply, and who decides on site?
5. What happens at high tide, in wind or heat, is the ride cancelled or moved?
6. What is included in the price (helmet, insurance, transfer)?
Rules we could not prove
For horses on the beach we found no rule from a municipality, nature park or harbour master for any of the five places. According to a press report, the model notice of the Portuguese national maritime authority for 2026 contains the wording that animals may not circulate outside the permitted zones (newspaper text, the official document was not available). Check the rules on site with the provider.
