Tuscany: choosing a ride near Florence or in the Maremma
Florence has the offers, the Maremma has the horse culture: who looks for what books differently.
Florence has more offers, the Maremma only one: what speaks for and against, what the sources document and which questions stay open before you book.
Florence and the hills
According to the offers, rides start in the hills outside the city, with villas, castles and woods; Visit Tuscany names the woods of Vallombrosa and Reggello with centuries-old trees. Riding does not take place in the centre. In our selection Florence and the hills outside the city have the most offers. Many offers name an aperitif or wine tasting. “From Florence” does not mean starting in the centre: ask about the meeting point and the journey.
The Maremma
According to Visit Tuscany the Maremma nature park is an area of 9,000 hectares between Principina a Mare and Talamone, with the Uccellina mountains, 25 kilometres of coast with sandy beaches and cliffs, marshes, pine forests and the plain of the Ombrone mouth. The Maremma is known for its butteri, the mounted herdsmen, and for Maremma cattle that live freely in the park. In our selection there is one offer: “Panorama rides in the Tuscan Maremma” at GetYourGuide, and none at Viator. Whether the ride runs in the nature park is stated by the provider; we found no riding rule for the park.

How to choose
- A few hours, with Florence before or after: Florence and the hills have the choice of rides and pick-ups.
- Coast and landscape with horse culture: the Maremma, with a single offer in our selection. Ask about the start place, the route and whether riding is in the park.
- Wine: Near Florence rides with a wine tasting are common. In the Maremma the title of our offer names no wine tasting; we did not evaluate the offer description here.
- Season: Only the vine cycle in the Chianti Classico is documented, according to the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico: budbreak in April, grape ripening from the third ten days of September to the second ten days of October, leaf fall in the second half of November. That applies to the Chianti, not automatically to the Maremma. The regional weather consortium LaMMA names November as usually the wettest month of Tuscany. We did not read a monthly table for the riding areas.
Questions for the provider
- Where is the meeting point, and how far is it from the city centre?
- How long are you really in the saddle, and how much of it is wine tasting or food?
- Does the ride run in the nature park, and which rules apply to horses?
- What level is required, and is there a weight limit in kilograms?
- How hot is it at the start time, and what happens in rain?
- What is in the price (transfer, tasting), and until when is cancellation free?
What we could not confirm
No weather data for the riding areas. No riding rule for the Maremma nature park.
