Riding on Mallorca: Alcúdia, Randa and what to clarify before you book

On Mallorca the problem is not the beach but whether riding there is allowed.

Beach ride, pine forest, Randa valley: what the providers name, how the weather runs through the year and why the question about the beach comes first.

Where people ride on Mallorca

The offers in our selection lie in the northeast and the middle of the island. At Can Picafort rides start into the Bay of Alcúdia: dunes, pine forest and the sea, according to the provider up to the Son Real area. A second provider names forest tracks and beach at sunset. At Randa a provider offers rides around the town through valleys, mountains, meadows and forests with Andalusian horses. UNESCO calls the mountains in the northwest, the Serra de Tramuntana, a cultural landscape of terraces and cobbled paths with a water system; we found no rides there among the providers.

The beach: ask first, then book

One provider writes that very few routes on the island allow horses on the sand and that its ride is therefore rare. That is the provider’s statement; we found no rule. So ask before you book whether the ride really runs on the beach, on which stretch, and whether that applies all year.

How the year runs

According to AEMET (station Palma Puerto, normals 1981 to 2010) the mean daily maximum is 15.4 degrees in January, 19.2 in April, 29.4 in July and 23.7 in October. Rain is 6 millimetres in July, 69 in October and 48 in December; the year brings 449 millimetres. The sun shines on average 346 hours a month in July and 151 in December. The station is on the coast in Palma; inland and in the mountains the values may differ. For the ride that means: in July heat decides the start time, in October the rain, in winter the daylight. A sunset ride in July starts in the evening according to the provider; whether that still works in December, ask the provider.

Which kinds of offers there are

  1. Ride on the beach or in the forest. Duration and price are shown on the card, live from the provider.
  2. Ride in the interior (Randa). The horse is matched to your level, according to the provider.
  3. Ride with wine, food or show. Several cards combine a ride with a wine tasting, brunch or dinner; one provider names an evening with a ride, barbecue, live music and a horse show. Ask how much time is left in the saddle.

Questions for the provider

  1. Where is the meeting point, and is hotel pick-up included in the price?
  2. Does the ride run on the beach, on which stretch, and is that so all year?
  3. How long are you really in the saddle, and how much of it is food or show?
  4. What level is required, and is there a weight limit in kilograms?
  5. How hot is it at the start time, and what happens in rain?
  6. How many guests and how many guides are there?

What we could not confirm

No riding rule for beaches found. Values only for Palma Puerto. No rides in the Serra de Tramuntana among the providers.
