Horse riding in Southwest Iceland

Lava under the hooves, the capital at your back.

In south-west Iceland you ride on young volcanic land. The Reykjanes peninsula is a young, highly volcanic part of Iceland. There, two tectonic plates drift apart. It stays cool. In summer the highest average temperatures are 9 to 15 degrees, in winter minus 1 to 4 degrees, with snow, rain and strong wind. Mosfellsbær lies between mountains and coast, only 15 minutes from the centre. The offers start in Reykjavík, in Mosfellsbær and in Hafnarfjörður. Whether a ride crosses lava is stated by the provider. Planning hint: summer suits short rides, and in winter warm layers matter. On the Golden Circle, two horse trails are designated in Þingvellir National Park. Riding on car roads is not allowed. Ask the provider whether the ride runs inside the park. —
